Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox had a disappointing start to the 2023 season, losing their Opening Day game to the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 10-9. The Red Sox pitchers struggled with their command, issuing 11 walks and allowing four home runs. Corey Kluber, making his debut for Boston, lasted only three innings and gave up five runs on six hits and three walks. The Red Sox bullpen was not much better, as they combined to allow five more runs on seven hits and eight walks.

The Red Sox offense tried to keep up with the Orioles, scoring nine runs on 14 hits. Rafael Devers had three hits and two RBIs, while Masataka Yoshida, who returned from his heroics at the World Baseball Classic, had two hits and an RBI. Triston Casas drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a groundout. Christian Arroyo had a two-run double in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one run, but Kenley Jansen, who left the game due to lightheadedness, could not complete the comeback.

The Red Sox will try to bounce back in their second game of the season on Friday, when they send Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound against John Means of the Orioles. The Red Sox hope to improve their pitching and defense, which let them down in their season opener.
